Fetalist

Congenital anomalies are reported as the fifth-highest cause of death according to the Global Burden of Disease study, they are shown to be the first cause of death between ages 1-4 since 2016 and second cause of death with 29% in all age groups according to Turkish Statistical Institute. Fetal surgical approaches enable the treatment of many congenital diseases that are diagnosed prenatally. However, the diagnostic process and the method of this process are challenging and limited. It is generally difficult to diagnose these diseases in utero. Since the modalities used have specific limitations per fetus; many of the tools cannot be applied to pregnant women and the ones that could be used cannot reach their optimum capacity which creates a challenging condition both for the patients and the doctors.

Abdominal pain constitutes 10% of emergency department visits. It still has 5% mortality and 10% morbidity. In the USA, per CDC data, 11M patients admitted to ED while 231K of them were diagnosed as appendicitis. The cost of Ap changes throughout the country $10K-35K. When we look at the details of the cost, complete blood count (CBC) is around $150, urine analysis is $30, abdominal X-ray is $150, ultrasonography (USG) is $200-600, computerized tomography (CT) is $750-1300, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is $550-1350 and hospitalization is $1500-3500. Regardless of the innovations in the technology, the diagnosis is still based on physical examination although there are many scoring systems to help the physicians.
